There goes an old Marathi saying “लवकर निजे, लवकर उठे, तया आरोग्य, ज्ञान, संपत्ती लाभे. It means; whoever goes to bed early (लवकर निजे) and rises early (लवकर उठे), he is blesses with Health (आरोग्य), Knowledge (ज्ञान) and Wealth (संपत्ती). You are also probably familiar with similar old saying by Ben Franklin “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and wise”. Whatever may be the origin of this saying but going to bed early and rising early can really create wonders in one’s life.
In today’s hectic and stressful life, we always try to balance professional and personal life and set certain goals. But it is often seen that many of our goals remain on paper, and we end up getting sucked into daily firefighting on every front of our life. Going to bed early and rising early can help us in achieving our goals to a greater extent.
Disadvantages of rising late from bed:
Firstly, let’s look at few of the disadvantages of going to bed late and rising late. When we rise late, we are left with very less time to think about our goals, how to achieve them and fail to plan how to achieve it.
When we are late, we just try to do a catch up with everything from getting ready to office, house chores, preparing kids for school, catching a bus/train/cab, long ques at toll booths, heavy traffic etc. Due to this catch-up game, we end up getting tired, left with very less energy when we reach office, and many times end up in skipping our breakfast. Unknowingly we are sucked into that cycle and totally forget our goals, or we are left with very little energy to pursue our goals and milestones.
When we go to bed late, we stress our body beyond limits due to which we suffer from insomnia and other effects like acidity and pain in eyes. Radiations from use of mobiles/laptops till late night strains eyes a lot. We are totally running out of energy when going to bed very late.
Due to this cycle, there is no time left for thinking about our goals, there is no time left for planning how to achieve our goals, there is no time left to pursue our hobbies etc. It seems like, life is totally out of our control, and we are just running behind the clock and missed deadlines.
Advantages of waking up at 5am:
Rising early (it goes without saying that we should go to bed early) really creates wonders. We are ahead of others when we rise daily at 5AM. We get lot of time to plan our day, pursue our hobbies and do regular exercise. Once it becomes a habit, we start seeing great results. Rather that running behind the clock by rising late, it looks like there is lot of time to plan everything and we are always ahead of time. Rising at 5AM feels our body with lot of positive energy and it improves our creativity. One most important point is that 5amers don’t skip/miss the breakfast, which is also the most important meal of the day.
Experts like Robin Sharma have suggested that One Hour (60 minutes) after we get up should be split into three parts of 20mins each. For the first 20mins, it is recommended to do exercise which takes laziness out of our body and helps us to remain energetic till we go to bed. Second set of 20mins should be used to plan for the day and last set of 20mins should be used for our creative hobbies like reading, sketching, painting, writing etc.
Waking up at magical hour of 5AM acts like a catalyst to reset our habits and change our life. As per research by Neuroscientists, routine of waking up at 5AM forges new maps in the brain, which grow in size, speed and efficiency over time until a habit is formed, and the brain has physically been changed.
US based entrepreneur and trainer Bryce Chapman says in his productivity manual, “If you think about your magnificent obsession during your early morning habit that too, will become a well-used path, bigger, stronger, faster. Early in the morning, the brain is well rested, having processed the previous day’s input overnight. You don’t have many distractions, it is quiet, and time is yours to do whatever you choose”.
Some of the famous 5amers are Barack and Michelle Obama, Michel Dell, George W Bush, Indra Nooyi and Akshay Kumar.
One should follow this principle of going to bed early and rising early at least for 2 months to see wonders it creates in one’s life.
